When to Contact Your Surgical Team During Recovery

When to Contact Your Surgical Team During Recovery

Recovery after surgery can feel different from one day to the next. Some swelling, bruising, tightness, and discomfort can be expected, especially in the early stages. Even so, it is not always easy to know what is part of normal healing and what should be checked.

After Abdominoplasty in Adelaide, your surgical team will give you instructions for wound care, garments, medication, movement, and follow-up appointments. Those instructions are important, but they do not replace getting advice when something feels off.

When Something Does Not Feel Right

You know your body better than anyone. If a symptom feels unusual, is getting worse, or does not match what you were told to expect, it is worth contacting your surgical team.

You should seek advice if you notice:

  • Increasing pain that is not helped by prescribed medication
  • Redness, heat, discharge, or opening around the wound
  • Fever, chills, or feeling suddenly unwell
  • Chest pain, breathing difficulty, or calf pain

Some symptoms need urgent care. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, heavy bleeding, or sudden severe symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Wound Changes During Healing

Your incision will change as it heals. Mild swelling, bruising, and tightness are common early on. However, increasing redness, fluid leakage, an unpleasant smell, or wound separation should be reported.

Do not apply creams, ointments, or extra dressings unless your team has advised you to. What seems helpful at home may interfere with healing or make it harder for your surgeon to assess the area.

Dr Quoc Lam, a plastic surgeon in Adelaide CBD, may ask you to send photos or come in for a review. This allows the team to decide whether reassurance, wound care changes, or treatment is needed.

Pain, Movement, and Daily Activity

Discomfort is expected after abdominoplasty, particularly when getting in and out of bed, coughing, or walking. Over time, pain should gradually become easier to manage.

If pain suddenly becomes sharper, stronger, or different from earlier in recovery, contact your team. It is also a good idea to ask before returning to driving, exercise, lifting, or demanding work.

Doing too much too soon can place pressure on healing tissues. On the other hand, gentle movement is often encouraged to support circulation. Your team will guide you on the right balance.

Garments, Drains, and Medication

Some patients may have drains after surgery, while others may not. If you do have drains, our team will explain how to monitor them and when they may be removed. Call the clinic if a drain comes loose, stops working, or the fluid output changes suddenly.

Your garment should feel supportive, not painful. If it feels too tight, affects breathing, or causes new discomfort, get advice. You should also contact our team if medication causes nausea, rash, dizziness, or other unexpected effects.

Keep the Conversation Open

You do not need to wait until a follow-up appointment if you are worried. Asking early can prevent small concerns from becoming harder to manage.

During recovery with Cranford House Plastic Surgery, follow-up care is part of the process. Staying in contact with your surgical team helps make recovery clearer, safer, and less stressful.
